One qualifier meet down, one to go.

South Florida Aquatic Club swimmers survived the first step of getting to the Nov. 10-12 FHSAA State High School Swimming Championships in Orlando this past week at districts.

SOFLO qualified 118 swimmers for this week’s four region meets in Broward and Palm Beach counties, the most from any Florida Gold Coast club.

While the majority of qualifiers were from Broward County, two SOFLO swimmers, Maria Lopez of Hialeah Gardens and Roger Capote of American High also qualified at the District 11-3A meet in Miami.

Many were swimming tired after training but managed to swim well enough to qualify for this week’s region meets where they will be rested and ready to swim fast enough in the final step toward qualifying for the FHSAA Class 1A, 2A and 3A meets.

SOFLO SWIMMERS RESULTS

DISTRICT 9-3A at Deerfield Beach

Douglas defended its’ girls team title and Deerfield Beach knocked off Douglas to win the boys team title by two points. Douglas swept all three girls relays. Douglas junior Anne Kuczynski won district titles in the 200-yard individual medley (2:18.26) and 100-yard freestyle (57.34). Monarch freshman Morgan Nixon won the 500-yard freestyle in 6:00.15. Taravella freshman Kelly Kealty won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:13.39. Douglas senior Mauricio Hidalgo won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:06.30 and 100-yard butterfly in 55.26. Taravella junior Keegan Boisson-Yates won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.52 and 100-yard freestyle in 48.04. Taravella sophomore Alex Evdokimov of Taravella won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.32.

DISTRICT 10-3A at Plantation Central Park

Defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas swept the boys and girls team titles by nearly 200 points. Freshman Melissa Marinheiro of West Broward won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:54.02 and 500-yard freestyle in 4:58.12. Big sister Marcella Marinheiro, a junior at West Broward, won the 100-yard backstroke in 59.66. Mia Fiorenzi of St. Thomas won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.80. Senior Ashley Monaghan of St. Thomas Aquinas won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.60. Junior Brandon Goldman of St. Thomas was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:58.18 and 100-yard backstroke in 54.40.

Senior Victoria Sage of Pembroke Pines Charter won the 500-yard freestyle in 5:35.23 for the district champions. Former state champion Marc Rojas of Pembroke Pines Charter won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:01.91 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:01.44.

DISTRICT 10-1A at Pompano Beach

Rain played havoc with swimmers at a meet that features some of the fastest swimmers in the state. Because of heavy rains meet officials decided to cancel championship finals and go with the morning prelim time. Powerhouse and defending champion Pine Crest dominated the competition to sweep the boys and girls team titles ahead of St. Andrew’s, Westminster Academy and Coral Springs Charter. Pine Crest freshman Tyla Martin was second in the 100-yard backstroke in 1L01.36 bettering her previous best of 1:02.39. Martin was fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 58.38  and led off the winning 200-yard medley relay and anchored the runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay.

DISTRICT 11-1A at Plantation Central Park

Defending champion American Heritage Plantation swept the boys and girls team titles. In a battle between the county’s two most improved teams, University School girls edged South Florida Heat, 319-310 for second. Luke Torres of American Heritage, coming off a virus, was a member of the winning 200-yard medley (1:39.16) and 400-yard freestyle (3:12.32) relays, second in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.02 and second in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.70. Marco Hosfeld of University School was second in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:42.65 and third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.16.
