Learn To Swim, Enjoy The Sport For A Lifetime
Sep 21 2012Every child in America including South Florida needs to learn how to swim.
And, what better place than the Coral Springs Aquatic Complex with its world-class coaches, facilities and Swim America lessons program.
Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children, especially toddlers and pre-school age children between the ages of 12 months and four years. In Florida, drowning is actually the leading cause of death and leads the nation in number of childhood drownings.
Among the counties, State Health Department statistics show that for the past five years, Broward and Palm Beach counties have consistently been among the five counties with the highest drowning rates.
The U.S. statistics are even more staggering:
- Drowning is the second-leading cause of childhood accidental death.
- Ten people drown each day in the U.S.
- Seven out of 10 African-American children cannot swim.
- Six out of 10 Hispanic children cannot swim.
- Forty percent of Caucasian children have low or no swimming ability.
- Children from non-swimming households are eight times more likely to be at-risk of drowning.
- Participation in formal swim lessons can reduce the likelihood of childhood drowning by 88 percent.
Whether you are in a pool, the ocean or lake, drowning is always a risk which is why swim lessons are essential at an early age. It can also lead to a lifetime of fun including age group swim teams, high school teams, earning college scholarships, competing in the Olympics and other meets as well as masters swimming.
