Five top Coral Springs swimmers have qualified to compete against some of the fastest swimmers in the southern United States at the 2014 Southern Zone Age Group Championship July 28 through August 4 in San Antonio, Texas.
Having achieved at least three AAA National Meet Time Standards to date, Coral Springs Swim Club (CSSC) athletes Hannah Virgin, 13, Sebastian Vargas, 15, Gabriella Beltrano, 12, and Delaney Biro, 12, have all qualified to compete in the exclusive meet. Rachel Botting, 12, will swim as an alternate if one of the four turns down their spot. Both Virgin and Vargas competed in the Zone last year.
A total 48 swimmers in all, Southern Zone Teams are comprised of eight boys and eight girls each all of whom show promise to compete at the national level.
Looking back on past performances, Beltrano achieved AAA times in the 50 and 100 yard backstroke and 50 meter backstroke last year. Biro is triple-A rated in the 50 and 100 yard/meter freestyle and butterfly and Virgin holds top times (AAA) in eight events: the 100 and 200 yard breastroke; the 50, 100 and 200 meter freestyle; the 200 meter breastroke; 100 meter butterfly and 200 meter individual medley.
Exemplifying speed and endurance, Vargas holds AAAA times in 50, 100, 200 and 500 yard freestyle events; the 100 and 200 yard butterfly and 100 meter freestyle. Additionally, the senior swimmer holds AAA times in seven other short course and long course events.
Last year, the FGC Southern Zone Team finished 7th in combined team standings.
CSSC Head Coach, Bruno Darzi, said the speed of young swimmers is a testament to the hard work of athletes and coaches, and the support and encouragement of swim club parents.
“These are some of the fastest young swimmers in the southern U.S. We’re proud to have them represent CSSC in the Southern Zone Championship,” he said.
