Volunteeroftheyear

It all started when taking pictures of his own daughter competing for CSSC. Then parents asked him to take pictures of their kids. Shortly thereafter, Dave Brewington became the swim club's official, unofficial photographer.

Brewington was named “Volunteer of the Year” at the CSSC banquet Thursday for his selfless, unyielding efforts in making CSSC swimmers look good on film. This year marks the first year of the award and swim club board members were unanimous in their decision.

“It’s hard these days to find anyone as dedicated as Dave to do what he does for the team. He does it because he is a kind, giving person and for these characteristics we all feel he is well-deserved of the award,” said CSSC Board President, Danica Schimansky.

Not only does Brewington shoot pictures of swimmers during meets at no cost to the swim club or its families, his photographs are crisp, clean and capture athletes in the water during their finest moments. After each meet, he posts them on his website www.aboobarley.com for all to download for free. Exemplary of his efforts, Brewington took portraits of swimmers and their families at this year’s award banquet to capture the rare moments swimmers at CSSC are seen with clothes on, joked Schimansky.

Thanks to the high quality of his shots, swimmers can see how sometimes an arm, leg or head is out of place during a stroke, enabling them to improve at their next meet, said CSSC Volunteer Coordinator, Patty Gomez.

“But more importantly, they get to see what they’re doing right,” she said. “Dave has spent countless hours on deck snapping pictures of CSSC swimmers to the delight of swim club families. His action shots are amazing and illustrate the beauty of our team's work.”

Brewington didn’t expect to receive the award Thursday. He came to the banquet only to take pictures and share the event with family and friends.

“Good thing I have a strong heart. I almost had a heart attack when they called my name,” he said.
